Educational Influences Timeline

Reflection

Creating this timeline encompassing some key moments in my life that have brought me to TRU perusing my Bachelor of Education was a highlight of my first semester in the Teaching Program. Diving deep into to realm of critical reflection was a thought evoking process that allowed me to understand what these key influences mean to my life as a future educator. Being open and vulnerable is something that does not always come easy to me, and to be able to share my journey of joy and hardship was a healing experience.

PE Lesson Plan

Reflection:

Teaching and planning a PE lesson was so much fun! I am learning how important it is to be organized and prepared and to make sure everyone’s having an enjoyable experience. PE was a wonderful course filled with lighter content, but just as important as the rest. PE is an area of interest for me because I love to be active. Planning an indoor, 3v3 soccer game was so much for for my peers and myself. We executed the lesson well, and everyone had a fun time.

Course Reflections

Language and Literacy

Our creative side came alive in Language and Literacy this semester. I wrote my first ever children’s book, with the assistance of my 14 year old daughter, Ever who did the illustrations. It was so much fun to go through the writing process and learn about the importance of brainstorming, drafts and editing. We also got to create a ‘One Line Fairytale’ book, done together as a class. This was also a very enjoyable process and we were free to be as creative as possible. I would love to do this project together in my future classroom. We dove deep into various writing strategies and presented in pairs on one specific type. We then followed by compiling 20 different writing strategies that we learned through the semester and handed it in as a summative project and a very useful guide for when we are in the classroom. I leaned many useful strategies that I will incorporate into my future classroom.

Mathematics

Math was one of the highlights of my first year in the Bachelor of Education program. From someone who has struggled with Math for many years, I felt very unsure at the beginning of this course. The personal growth I have endured has been huge and my confidence has soared. This course has been one of my biggest accomplishments this year and I learned many ways to make Math a fun learning experience. From diving deep into my positive Math mindset, to learning ways to get students thinking, from games and prompts to encourage thinking, I am excited to share my newfound knowledge and love for Math with my future students.

Social Studies

This course for me was a powerful learning experience that I enjoyed very much. From the experienced and wise lens of Indigenous professor, Dr. Roxane Letterlough we were introduced to many social issues that are happening in the world. From attending my very first (and not last) Pow wow, to discussions of racism and sexism, we were challenged to dive deep into material that was sensitive and important. We created a Social Justice initiative proposal and researched our idea and plan. I felt very inspired and would like to see this project through when I am a teacher. I was deeply moved and inspired to receive first hand teachings from an Indigenous leader in the community and I have felt a deep pull to incorporate much of my learning into my future teaching practice.

Practicum Reflections

There was so much learning that happened for me during my practicum at Bert Edwards Science and Tech School in Ms. Duquette’s grade 2 class. Coming from a CEA background I am familiar with being in a classroom and working with students. Planning and executing my own lessons is something I have never done before and I truly learned so much. The importance of string classroom management is one of the biggest take-aways from me from my practicum experience. I learned that you can have the best lesson plans out there but if your classroom management is lacking, chaos can arise. I had a strong connection with the students and my Faculty Mentor and truly enjoyed being emersed in the teacher role. I am so excited for my next practicum at Westmount Elementary in Mrs. Hansen’s grade 6/7 class.
